Visa and migration

[ World Youth Day 2008 ]

If you hold an ETA-eligible passport, including Hong Kong residents who hold a Hong Kong SAR or British National (Overseas) passport, you will be eligible to travel to World Youth Day on this streamlined electronic visa. All you need to do is register online to attend World Youth Day (www.wyd2008.org) and your ETA application will be sent automatically to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Australia. You will then be notified by email the outcome of your application.

If you do not hold an ETA-eligible passport, you will need to apply for a Tourist visa (Subclass 676) in order to attend World Youth Day. As a registered pilgrim you will be entitled to apply for your visa free of Australian Government charges by following the process listed below.

An application may be lodged personally, by your representative or sent to the Visa Office by mail.

Processing Time

Up to 10 working days - we urge you to lodge your application well in advance of your intended travel.

To make an application follow these steps:

1)

Register with World Youth Day. See: www.wyd2008.org

2)

Print a copy of the World Youth Day coversheet after you have registered on the World Youth Day website and complete it

3)

Print a copy of the application form (number 48R - see below) and complete it

4)

If you are under 18:
Print out a copy of the parental consent form (number 1229 - see below) and ask your parents or guardians to complete it. You will also need to submit evidence of your relationship with your parent/ guardian (for example, a copy of your birth certificate) and a copy of identification for your parent/ guardian showing their signature (for example, a passport).

Prepare your supporting documentation:

1 passport sized photograph (no more than 6 months old)

1 copy of the page of your passport that shows your name and photograph*** OR
your valid passport, with evidence of your resident status in Hong Kong or Macau

Your Hong Kong ID or Macao ID card***

Evidence that you will be able to support yourself while in Australia. This could include any fundraising you have been involved, bank statements, or evidence financial support from a sponsoring organisation

Evidence of enrolment in study and/or employment in your home country, if applicable

If you are employed, a letter from your employer stating your position, length of employment, salary and dates of leave granted

Your travel itinerary***

Letter of endorsement from your local Bishop

If you are 70 years of age or over, you will need to attend a Panel Doctor for an assessment of whether you are fit to travel to Australia.

You will also need to provide evidence of health insurance cover for the full duration of your intended stay in Australia.

*** Bring originals plus one photocopy to include with your application.

Lodge your application with supporting documents at the following Australian Immigration Office:
