Travel Advice

The Australian Government's travel advisory and consular assistance service

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has recently updated the Travel Advice for Hong Kong and the Travel Bulletin for Avian Influenza to include new information regarding the precautions the department is taking overseas to protect its missions and staff from the risk of avian influenza (also known as bird flu). Australians are advised to study these precautions and to consider what steps they need to take regarding their own situation.

Australians resident or travelling in Hong Kong are advised to regularly visit the department's website at http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/ to obtain the latest travel information. Further information regarding avian influenza can be obtained from the Department of Health and Ageing's website at http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/health-avian_influenza-faq.htm and also from the Hong Kong Government Information Centre at http://www.info.gov.hk/info/flu/eng/index.htm.

Before you travel make sure your passport is valid for at least a further 6 months

Many countries around the world, and most in the Asian region, will only grant entry to travellers provided that they have at least 6 months validity on their passports.

Every month the Australian Consulate-General serves dozens of Australians who have been caught out by this requirement. Many have been denied uplift by airlines and have had to find their way back into Hong Kong and apply for a new passport. This may mean delays to travel plans which eat into valuable holiday time or important business trips.

The Australian Consulate-General will do all it can to help Australians who have found themselves in such a fix but to avoid the situation in the first place recommends that you check your passport for the appropriate validity well before your intended travel.
