China Visa Requirements

Important Notice for Australian Residents in Hong Kong & Macau

There has been extensive media coverage about reported “changes” to Visa application requirements for entering China.

Visa entry and exit requirements are a matter for individual countries to set and enforce and can change with little or no notice.

In recent weeks, Chinese authorities have tightened enforcement of documentation requirements for tourist (L) and business (F) visa applications, and have reduced the number of multiple-entry visas issued.

In addition, foreign passport holders may not be issued short-stop visas at border checkpoints between the Hong Kong and Macau Special Administrative Regions and the Chinese mainland.

Australians resident in Hong Kong and Macau are encouraged to seek detailed information from the local Commissioner’s Office of China’s Foreign Ministry well in advance of your travel, in particular if you plan to travel to China during the Summer Olympic Games.

The Commissioner’s Office is the appropriate authority for issuing Chinese visas in Hong Kong and Macau.

Accordingly you are advised to contact them directly, as the Australian Consulate-General is not in a position to assist with obtaining Chinese visas.

Commissioner’s Office details:

Australian travellers who are not resident in Hong Kong or Macau should seek information from the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate and apply for entry visas before leaving Australia.

Chinese authorities are also conducting more frequent spot-checks of foreigners’ identification documents in areas popular with expatriates.

Failure to carry ID or comply with the registration requirement could result in fines and detention.
